VOLCANO (ochre)

In the transition between wet and dry states of matter, the energies, rhythms, and textures of the dry land and running water are translated into painting. The artist smashes earth against the canvas, pours watery paint over it, and applies thick layers of gesso and color. Spontaneously, she adds notes and symbols with her fingers and brush handles, building layer upon layer.

The color palette draws from millennia-old materials found in the volcanic landscapes of Cabo de Gata, Andalusia, Spain. The artist collects pigments directly from the rocks, where they have been ground into powder by the natural forces of water, salt, and sun.

The signs and symbols exist purely through their form and movement, weaving themselves into the dense layers of color, dust, and earth.
